As my introductory project at Naughty Dog, I was brought in mid-production on Uncharted 2 with the challenge of building an FX department that could produce "current industry quality" effects. With the assistance of a dedicated and ingenious graphics programmer, we completely rebuilt the tools, pipeline, and FX engine from the ground up.
The actual development of the FX was a crazy scramble, as our tools were evolving right up until the end of our schedule. The look development, art style, and ultimate implementation of our effects evolved through iteration, failure, and technical achievements right up to the end of production. We’d achieved our goal of creating a department capable of competing with the rest of the industry, but the final product left us hungry to do more.
